Brownie Troop 2022 Recycle Bicycle
Deanna Lombardo

“Recycle Bicycles” is an environmental art experience inviting children and local residents to submit works for both a traveling and permanent sculpture exhibition. Artists are asked to create unique sculptures using recycled and found items, mainly nonfunctional “old” bicycles. Brownie Troop 2022 loved the idea and wanted to create a sculpture representing their commitment to their troop and to the environment. With the motto - think clean, think green and get your wheels spinning - the girls found an old busted-up bike headed to the landfill for disposal and diverted it! The girls used old scrap items to create their master piece. An older Girl Scout troop contributed to the project by donating old Girl Scout stickers, postcards and other memorabilia items which the Brownies used to decorate their bike. When it was completed, the girls were invited to the opening festival to see their art piece. “It was exciting to watch the girls walk around and see all the great array of recycled sculptures displayed this year and to see how their art piece contributed to the exhibit,” says Karen Riley, S.C.R.A.P. Gallery Executive Director. “It is amazing to see such creativity in kids!” This year’s “Recycle Bicycles” will travel throughout the Coachella Valley and beyond. Sculptures will be permanently installed at the S.C.R.A.P. Gallery, The Student Creative Recycling Art Program for the Environment in Indio, CA.
